In the Philippine and many other countries, the speed limit is set at 20kph on school zones. This is because almost all pedestrians will survive if they got hit at 20kph, but at 50kph between 37-45% will die (source: Effects of Vehicle Speed on Pedestrian Fatalities).
Children are more likely to run out and into the road without precautions. You have to be really careful and stay within the speed limit when driving in school zone areas, even when the ‘School Zone’ sign isn’t present.
School buses and other school service vehicles are a big obstruction to the children’s sight of the road, and yours. When driving near school with many parked vehicles and school buses, always anticipate that a child might run suddenly into the road so that you’re ready to step on the brakes immediately.
