Changing lanes

If you intend to move your vehicle from the left-hand lane to the right-hand lane or vice versa, you should first check your mirrors, then signal your intention, check your mirrors again, then check over your shoulder in your blind spot before you change lanes. If there is not a space for you to move lanes then you need to adjust your speed to find a space.

You must always be aware of how traffic is doing in the lane you intend to move into. In heavy traffic, vehicles in the lane that you’re moving into might stop suddenly, so you need to ensure that you can stop safely, too, and that you have enough gap between you and the vehicle you’ll be following.

You also have to be mindful of the vehicle behind you as they’ll have less room to stop because you will have halved the gap by moving in front of them. If traffic ahead suddenly stops, the vehicle behind you might not be able to stop. Immediately after you move into a gap, create enough space between you and the vehicle in front.
